Delegate David Yancey
David Yancey, was born and raised in Newport News, is a 1990 graduate of Peninsula Catholic High School and a 1995 graduate of the University of Georgia, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History. In addition to his education, he has also taken professional classes from The New York Institute of Finance.
David has been involved in his family’s business, real estate and investments, since 2001. In 2003, he started his own business which included real estate development and property management. In 2009 he also started a commercial fishing venture. David holds Virginia professional licenses in Real Estate, Contracting, and Commercial Fishing. He is a member of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, the York County Chamber of Commerce, the Denbigh Business Alliance, the Downtown Newport News Merchants & Neighbors Alliance, and the Poquoson Business Alliance.
In 2011, David was appointed as a board member to the City of Newport News Efficiency Task Force on City Government. This one year task force is a citizen committee, chaired by the Mayor of Newport News and a Member of the City Council, designed to look at innovative ways to improve the role of government in Newport News. David has worked with city staff to find ways to improve city services, reduce costs and debt burdens, and discover ways in which to help local people invest in the community and create jobs.
Education is a very important aspect of David’s life. In 2011, David was appointed to serve on the Newport News Education Foundation and was recently elected to serve another three-year term. In college David volunteered as a tutor for disadvantaged youth and continued his commitment in education by serving on the board of Peninsula Catholic High School from 2003 to 2006.
Currently, David serves as a volunteer head coach for the Warwick High School Rugby Football Club where he has been since 2009. In 2011 he was named a High School Board member for Rugby Virginia and a Board Member for the Peninsula High School Rugby League. He has also served as a member of the Virginia Rugby Union and as a former Club President for the Newport News Rugby Football Club. As a coach, David stresses education, graduation, and the importance of bridging the gap between receiving a quality education and employment.
In addition to his business and community involvement, David has also found time to assist with other local service groups including the American Heart Association Fundraising Board’s Heart Ball in Newport News, People-to-People Next Generation, Rotary International, and is a lifetime member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
